Abstract (EN)
Objective:The aim of our study is to examine the effects of respiratory muscle training on respiratory muscle strength, exercise capacity, anxiety-depression level and functional mobility in individuals with mental retardation. Method: This study was carried out in a rehabilitation center that provides inpatient services 24/7.36 individuals diagnosed with mild or moderate mental retardation were included in the study. The groups were randomly divided into two groups as control (n=18) and study group (n=18). The physical characteristics of the individuals included in the study, MIP and MEP values, 6-minute walk test (6 MWT), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), timed get-go test scores were recorded. All the cases included in the study were included in the physiotherapy and rehabilitation program twice a week for 12 weeks. Aerobic exercise was applied to the control group. In the study group, respiratory muscle training was given together with aerobic exercise. Evaluations were repeated at the beginning and end of the study. Between the groups, the change between the initial and final assessments was statistically compared. Results: Demographic datas of both groups were similar when compared. It was observed that MIP and MEP values increased significantly in the control and study groups after the 12-week exercise program. Between the control and study groups, it was observed that the MIP value increased significantly in favor of the study group. There was no significant difference in MEP value between the groups. There was a significant increase in 6 MWT distance in both groups. However, no significant difference was observed between the groups. There was a significant decrease in the anxiety and depression parameters of the HADS scale and the duration of the timed up and go test in both groups. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups. Conclusion: Respiratory muscle training given to individuals with mental retardation has been found to significantly improve respiratory muscle strength, exercise capacity, anxiety-depression level and functional mobility. Key words: Mental retardation, respiratory muscle training, functional mobility, anxiety and depression, exercise capacity.
