Factors affecting quality of life and disease severity in children in our center

ABSTRACT Purpose: To identify and assess the factors that affect the quality of life of children with Cystic Fibrosis. Material and Methods: Design: Retrospective and Questionnaire study Setting: Dicle University Hospitals, Child Health and Diseases department, Child Thoracic Diseases policlinic. Study period:February 14, 2017 to July 30, 2017 Patients: patients between the ages of 6 and 13 who are definitely diagnosed with cystic fibrosis between 2011 and 2016, and are still followed-up in our center, and are not in clinical exacerbation period, are not infected with acute respiratory infections, does not have any mental retardation, reading problems and other chronic diseases. Findings: The study encompasses 40 patients and 40 parents. When the CFQR scales of the parents of the patients who were admitted to the hospital and those who did not are reviewed, a statistically significant difference in the treatment and digestion scores was identified. There was a statistically significant difference only in the physical functioning parameters when we looked at the average of the scores according to the CFQR of the patients who were admitted to the hospital and those who were not. When we looked at the CFQR scores of the parents of patients who were diagnosed with PA infection and those who were not, there was a significant positive difference in vitality, treatment, health, body image, and digestion scores. When we examined the results of the children's CFQR, there was a significant increase in physical functioning, emotional functioning, treatment load, body image and digestive symptoms scores according to the patients who were not diagnosed with PA infection According to CFQR questionnaire replied by parents; assessing patients with BMI below 25th percentile and over 25th percentile; physical functioning, vitality, eating disorders, treatment load, body image, weight, digestive symptoms and school performance scores of patients with BMI below 25thpercentile were found to be statistically significantly lower compared to those above 25th percentile.According to v the CFQR questionnaire replied by children, when we evaluated BMI below 25th percentile and above 25th percentile; physical functioning, eating disorders, treatment burden, social functioning, body image, respiratory symptom scores were found to be lower in patients with BMI below 25th percentile. On the other hand, according to the CFQR questionnaire replied by children, there wasn't a significant relationship between passive smoking and children's questionnaire scores. According to the parental CFQR questionnaire, there was a significant relationship between passive smoking and the score of weight and digestive symptoms. Patients with passive smoking exposure had lower weight and digestibility scores than patients without passive smoking exposure Conclusion: Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection, hospitalization and malnutrition have negative effects on the quality of life of our patients.
