Abstract (EN)

The increasing worldwide energy consumption and the environmental damage caused by the use of fossil fuels, the depletion of natural resources, and the issue of climate change have heightened the importance of energy efficiency, particularly in essential building needs such as heating, cooling, and lighting. Traditional architectural structures in Anatolia are considered to successfully utilize local materials and environmental data in the design of low-energy buildings. These traditional buildings are recognized as important references for contemporary architects in designing energy-efficient structures. Traditional homes stand out as structures contributing to environmental sustainability through the use of local materials and climate-adapted design principles. This study aims to provide an in-depth exploration of the historical development of climate-responsive design by examining research on traditional architecture from a broader perspective and to demonstrate the success of traditional homes in terms of climate-responsive design through a specific traditional building. In the first section of this study, the concept of climate-responsive design is discussed, and information is provided on climate elements and physical factors influencing climate. Additionally, climate-responsive design and design parameters for different climate regions in Turkey are addressed. The second section introduces the study area, Mersin Province, with a focus on the city's location, geographical features, topography, climate, and traditional dwellings. The third section selects a historical building known as the Karamancılar Mansion located on Uray Street in Mersin and simulates the energy requirements that would arise during the construction of this building using both traditional and contemporary building materials through energy calculation software. Annual energy needs are calculated based on the simulation results, and evaluations are made using the data obtained from these calculations.
