Hellenistic pottery from the excavations at the lower bath-palestra in Metropolis

HELLENISTIC POTTERY FOUND IN THE EXCAVATIONS OF THE LOWER BATH PALAESTRA OF METROPOLIS The ancient city of Metropolis is located on a hill between Yeniköy and Özbey neighborhoods in Torbalı district of İzmir. The findings constitute the subject of the thesis consisting of Hellenistic pottery from the Lower Bath Palaestra structure located on the eastern slope of the hill where the city was founded. 280 pottery sherds belonging to the Hellenistic Period, were found as a result of the excavations carried out between 2003-2018, are included in the catalogue. The Hellenistic pottery from the Lower Bath Palaestra structure of Metropolis were examined under ten groups. These groups are classified as Slip Ware, West Slope Ware, mold-made bowls and pottery with white ground. As pottery forms; bowls, plates, kantharoi, craters, lagynoi, unguentariums, oil lamps, amphorae and chytras are present within the groups. Plates and mold-made bowls constitute the find density within the groups. Among these groups, the earliest examples are from the 4th century BCE, the latest examples are dated to the beginning of the 1st century BCE. The most numerous findings among the groups are the sherds belonging to the 2nd century BCE. Key Words: Metropolis, Bath-Palaestra, Hellenistic Pottery
