The investigation of the performance of an existing reinforced concrete building according to 2007's earthquake code and its strengthening

In this study, deformation controlled a nonlinear analysis method (Static Pushover Analysis Method) based on performance concept was used. The response of structures subjected to earthquake was evaluated to check the safety of structures and to determine the performance level of them. The increasing of the performance of the structures with low performance under earthquakes was aimed via adding reinforced concrete shear walls.In the `Introduction Section? , the effective factors in Diyarbakır and Turkey which became important for choosing the topic of the thesis were tackled.In the `Second Section?, a literature search was carried out regarding this subject.In the `Third Section?, the concept of earthquake , its effects in our country and the reasons for these effects were described.In the `Fourth Section?, the concept of performance was explained. Information about the relationship between the earthquake levels and building performance, the performance levels described for buildings and the targeted performance levels was given.In the `Fifth Section?, the information was given about the criteria for summing up data from the buildings which are decided to be retrofitted and a common information was given about the general principles for the earthquake analysis in the evaluation of the existing buildings, and linear and nonlinear analysis method.In the `Sixth Section?, an information about retrofitting methods was given.In the `Seventh Section?, the performance of an existing building with seven storeys and basement was determined and the performance of this building was raised to the level of `life safety? by retrofitting which was in `collapse region? before.In the `Eight Section?, the conclusions derived from this study and the recommendations based on this conclusions were summarized.Key words : Performance, Retrofitting , Nonlinear Analysis.
