Abstract (EN)
The picture, which was used to describe emotions and events before the invention of writing, has also been used to support texts after writing was found and has continued its existence for ages. Pictures that support written texts and explain a subject are called illustrations in general, while pictures that support and explain information by taking place next to the texts in the books are called. In this direction, in the thesis, an extensive literature search has been done on the history of book illustrations and literature has been created on the history of book illustrations and children's book illustrations which was observed to be lacking. The tracing of the history of book illustration was started with the papyrus pictures in "Book of the Dead" found in Egypt 13th century BCE. As children's book illustrations, starting from the first illustrated children's book in the world, the histories of illustrated children's books in England, Russia, America and European countries were explained in detail, supported by visual examples. The history of book illustrations, before and after the Republic in Turkey, and the history of children's book illustrations are both discussed under separate titles. The history of illuminated manuscripts as a book illustration started with the illuminated manuscripts made for the sacred texts by Priest Mani in the 3rd century CE, and the history of the illuminated manuscripts from Mesopotamia to the Ottoman Empire was explained with visual examples, and Ottoman illuminated manuscripts were started. The improvement and development of illuminated manuscripts in the period from the beginning of the Republic to today's Turkey were explained. Examples of children's books made with illuminated manuscripts in 21st century Turkey were included in the thesis and their illustrations were analyzed. Using the illustration style of a 13th-century Eastern tale manuscript, a 19th-century Western tale chosen as a thesis project was rewritten and illustrated. For the thesis project tale book, a test of appreciation and interpretation was applied to the students who received pre-school education. During the test, children's opinions about book illustrations of the application project were taken and in line with the results, the children's expectations from the illustrations in the Picture books produced for them were revealed. Accordingly, the effects and results of the use of illuminated manuscripts as an illustration in preschool children's books reached in the limited universe consisting of 30 children aged 4-7 and 6 classroom teachers, and the expectations of children from picture books were written in the thesis.
