Availability of traditional Turkish art music maqam and scales in violin training in music education departments

In the research, it has been to determine the usage of traditional Turkish classical music maqams and scales in violin education in music education departments. Also it is aimed to practice the works of maqam music determined by the researcher in violin education with playing style of the traditional Turkish classical music and to reveal the effect of the said practice on the playing performances of the students. For this general purpose, the use of traditional Turkish classical music maqams and scales in the violin education process in music education departments has been revealed, and a training program has been created by the researcher for the use of the works containing traditional Turkish classical music maqams in violin education in music education departments. In the said training program, traditional Turkish classical music works, which are believed to enrich the violin literature, have been arranged so that they can be used in violin education. Through the violin lessons to be conducted according to the envisaged education program, violin students were provided with the opportunity to recognize and play the scales and works of traditional Turkish classical music maqams in the traditional form required by the makam. In order to reveal the effect of the said practice on the playing performances of the students, mixed research method and sequential descriptive pattern were used in the design of the research. In order to determine the performances of the study group students in perfroming maqam music, 'one group pre-test and post-test experimental design' which is one of the research methods included in the quasi-experimental design was used. In order to determine the descriptive dimension of the research, the opinions of 17 violin lecturers working in music education departments of 13 universities education faculties in the 2020-2021 academic year were consulted so as to reveal the use of traditional Turkish classical music maqams in violin lessons conducted in music teaching programs. The study group in the experimental dimension of the research consisted of 8 students studying in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades in the Music Education Department of Bursa Uludağ University Faculty of Education in the spring semester of 2020-2021. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the practice was carried out online as 1 lesson per week for 10 weeks via 'google meet'. As a result of the training given for the Hicaz, hüseyni and rast maqams, it has been seen that the post-test scores of all criterion skills were significantly higher than the pre-test scores.
