The positive and constructive impacts of music are undeniable. Therefore, it is crucial that musical heritage should be conserved and conveyed to future generations. With this motive of providing people tangible and intangible cultural heritage, musical instrument museums work as a mediator between people and musical heritage and preserve this heritage. In Turkey, nevertheless, besides the private and small public collections, there is no advanced music museum that serves these purposes. This need for an advanced music museum that communicates the evolution of music in Anatolia and neighboring lands and indicates how music and musical instruments are affected by the social, political and economic environment, has been the main motivation for this study. Hence, this thesis aims to be a guide for such a music museum in Turkey, and for scholars working in the field of music museums.Musical instruments museums serve the public for the purposes of education, research, conservation-restoration and pleasure, like all other museums. They act as an excellent resource for the research of the history of music and musical instruments. They shed light on the history of antique musical objects that survive until the present day. Moreover, they act as alternative learning spaces for pre-school, school-age and adult education, and they serve as dynamic places presenting a range of experiences to their audiences by means of concerts, workshops, theatrical performances and specific guided tours. Music can also be seen as a common language and musical instruments museums aim to exhibit this abstract issue with concrete objects, creating a living environment for this common language.It is important to study the improvements and management of such museums all over the world as the concept of a museum related to musical instruments has recently gained increasing attention in Turkey. This thesis will serve as a resource about collection management policies, conservation and restoration strategies, as well as public policies for a musical instrument museum by means of studying several different cases of musical instruments museums in Europe.
