Measurement of neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin in the umblical cord blood and evaluation of the connection with neonatal outcomes

Abstract (EN)
Introduction and Aim: The aim of this study is to invastigate NGAL as a biomarker in the umblikal cord blood, which may be an indication for the duration of neonatal babies in the womb and in particular the distress of acute kidney damage development. Materials and Method: This study invastigate the level of the NGAL taken from the umblikal cord blood of 180 babies born in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology between 2015-2016. Maternal diseases (eclampsia, placenta previa, gestational diabetes mellitus, oligohydroamnios) and the babys' week, weight, sex and if any diseases (RDS, neural tube defect, congenital heart disease, blood impairment and prematurity, etc.) were identified and classified, demografic situations and received data were compared. Results: %58.9 of the infants were male, %41,1 were female, %96,7 were cesarean (C/S) and %3.3 were born with NSVY, mean birth weight of these babies were 2500 (%74,4) g, %60 of them were borned in 37 weeks and over and %26,1 were borned in 32-37 weeks. %40 of these infants were premature and %60 were term. There was a statistically significant difference between RDS and birth weeks (p<0,05). Besides there was a statistically significant difference between developmental GIS anomaly and birth weeks (p<0,05). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups according to the gestational week of the infants who diagnosed as other disease in our study (p>0,05). There were statistically significant difference between early membrane rupture and NGAL, MAS and NGAL, VSD and NGAL, ABO incompatibility and NGAL and also breech delivery and NGAL (p<0,05). Conclusion: In clinical use, there is always a need for markers that divide patients into risk categories so that can lead to treatment, diagnose earlier and predict complications and adverse outcomes. In this regard, as NGAL took its place in routine use as a diagnostic biomarker in a short time, it will greatly contribute to clinical utility and the development of new therapeutic approaches.
