The curriculum for teaching the Qur'an in mosques from the perspective of teachers and trainees

The Presidency of Religious Affairs implements Qur'an courses and teaching programs in accordance with the needs and demands of citizens within the scope of non-formal religious education. One of these Qur'an courses teaching programs is the Qur'an Teaching Program in Mosques, which is applied for adults. The program, known as evening classes and applied for many years within the scope of non-formal religious education, became systematized in 2010. Our main purpose in this research, which we focus on the program in question, is to evaluate the Quran Teaching Program in Mosques from the perspective of the instructors and trainees and to reveal opinions about the program. In this context, the main question of the research is; "What do the objectives, subjects, teaching-learning situations and evaluation approaches of the Curriculum for Teaching the Qur'an in Mosques mean in the eyes of the instructors and the trainees as a whole?" expressed as. The research was carried out based on the phenomenology approach, one of the qualitative research methods. In the research, 9 districts in total, including Ankara province, 6 central districts and 3 provincial districts, were selected with the maximum diversity sampling method, which is one of the purposeful sampling types, and 10 teachers and programs on a voluntary basis, which opened a "Quran Teaching Program in Mosques" in the 2018-2019 academic year. Interviews were held with 19 participants. The research consists of three parts. In the first part; Under the title of adult education, the definition, periods and characteristics of adults, how religious education in adulthood is and information about it are given. In the same section, information is given about the mosques as the places where the program is implemented, the functions of mosques, the historical development of Quran education, the educational activities of the Presidency of Religious Affairs in mosques and the contents of the Quran Teaching Program in Mosques. In the second part; The findings obtained in the interviews with the trainers and trainees were interpreted. In the third section, which is the last section; The conclusions reached under the title of "Discussion, Conclusion and Suggestions" and the suggestions developed as a result of these results are included. Some of the results obtained from the findings and the discussions made within the framework of the literature are as follows. The desire to read and learn the Quran is one of the most important issues affecting the participation of the trainees in the program. Through these programs, people who have reached the middle or late adulthood period complete the information that they think they cannot complete their religious education, both in the family environment and in the education-teaching process. The Qur'an Teaching Program in Mosques has many benefits in the social dimension as well as in the individual dimension. Before participating in the program, the trainees come together only at prayer times, but they become more socialized due to their participation in the program. In addition, the program makes a positive contribution to the socialization processes of the trainees. The program is run by instructors who are more sensitive about reciting and teaching the Holy Quran, although it is not available in every mosque. The trainees, who share the information they learned in the program with their family members, positively affect the participation of women in Women's Qur'an Courses and children in Summer Qur'an Courses with the encouragement of the trainees. Instructors create separate spaces for the lesson, prepare a textbook in accordance with the curriculum of the program, inform the society through written, oral and digital media, and announce the program to wider audiences, documents, plaques, etc. that can contribute positively to the motivation of the instructors and trainees.
