Investigation of teachers' reasons for choosing teaching as a career and job satisfaction levels

The aim of this is study is to determine whether teachers' reasons for choosing teaching as a career and their job satisfaction levels differ significantly or not in terms of variables gender, age, length of service, place of duty, school grade, high school-college graduated from, education level of mother-father, birth place, school pleasantness, democracy attitude and thought for leaving teaching job. Survey research model was applied in the study. The sample of the study consists of 710 teachers who work Afyonkarahisar province at 2020-2021 academic year. To collect data, two instruments were used namely "Choosing Teaching Profession as a Career Scale" adopted to Turkish by Balyer ve Özcan (2014) and "Job Satisfactin Scale" developed by Gündüz (2008). Choosing teaching profession as a career scale's reliability coefficient was calculated ,85 and job satisfactin scale's reliability coefficient was calculated ,95. SPPS package program was used to analyze data. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis-H tests were used during data analysis. According to the results of the study, altruistic-intrinsic reasons play more important role for teachers to select the teaching job. Teachers' job selection reasons differ significantly in terms of variables gender, age, length of service, place of duty, school grade, school pleasantness, democracy attitude and thought for leaving teaching job. According to the results, it is found that teachers have relatvely high job satisfaction. Besides, teachers' job satisfaction differ significantly in terms of variables place of duty, birth place, school pleasantness, democracy attitude and thought for leaving teaching job.
