Özet (EN)

This study was conducted to determine the seafood consumption habits of families with children in the preschool age group (4–6 years) living in the Çukurova district of Adana, Türkiye. Face-to-face surveys were administered to the parents of children attending various preschool institutions in the region, and data obtained from 301 participants were analyzed. The majority of respondents were mothers, most of whom were between the ages of 25 and 34. In terms of educational status, a significant portion were high school graduates, followed by university graduates. Housewives constituted the largest occupational group, and most families reported a middle-income level. According to the findings, the highest frequency of fish consumption among children was once per week, followed by twice per month and once per month. More than half of the families reported that they did not introduce fish as complementary food before the age of one. During pregnancy and lactation, fish and fish oil consumption were found to be low, with the majority reporting no use of fish oil supplements in these periods. Overall family fish consumption patterns showed a similar distribution to that of children. Among cooking methods, baking was the most preferred, followed by frying and grilling. Sea bass was the most favored fish species, followed by gilt-head bream and anchovy, however the consumption of freshwater fish species in the region was found to be very limited. The data revealed a significant relationship between mothers' education levels and children's frequency of fish consumption, while no significant relationship was found for fathers' education levels or parental age. Additionally, fish consumption frequency increased as family income level rose. A large proportion of participants reported that they were aware of the health benefits of fish, most of them acquiring this knowledge through their own education. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of education and information programs, particularly those supported by public institutions, to improve fish consumption habits during the preschool period. Furthermore, improving access to fresh fish for families and developing practical and child‑friendly fish products are suggested as measures to promote healthier consumption habits.
