Water conflict in Middle East and transboundary rivers in Turkey

Abstract (EN)

It is clear that, water is the most important natural resource in the world and speices need it for continue their life. Unfortunately, for centuries, human being acted very careless about using water just like many different natural resources. But mankind couldn?t realise that water isn?t an endless source. In recent years, growing population, unplaned use of water resources, global warming and climate change cause water scarcity. And this issue endenger a necessity of water politics.Researches, shows that, there are 26 countries that suffering from water shortage in the world. And in thirty years time, minimum 46 maksimum 52 countries, would be suffering from the same issue. It is estimated that, there will be 65 countries which suffer from water shortage in 2050. Specialist convey that; world?s population will be 7 billion and sixty percent of this population will be devoided of enough water. Therefore water- rich countries believe that this natural resource is a power factor. And it is possible that, they may use this resource as a pressure and sanction element for the other countries which are not lucky to have enough water.This thesis aim to explain; The Middle East; the geography where the water problem is being faced deeply. And the reasons and results which may cause conflicts around water issue in this area. On the countrary to general idea this thesis suggest to peacefull solitions and positive hidro politics way for this geographies future.This thesis consists of three parts and a conclusion. The first part dwells on international terms related to water issues.The second part of the study aim to explain the transboundary water and transboundary water system which are accepted as a quarell element among to countries around the world. The international organizations such as International Law Association, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe legal regulations to solve this issue.Water in the Middle East, The Middle East inital water resourses, Turkey?s transbounboundary rivers Tigris and Euphrates and their effect to water issues in The Middle East and the agrements about this problem between Iraq, Syria and Turkey, Western countries approach to The Middle East water problem are examined in the thirt part of the thesis.In conclusion, The reasons which cause water shortage all around the world and specifically water problems in he Middle East and its effect to Turkey, Syria and Iraq are described. The question is ?Water war or water peace?? tried to be answered. Turkey?s water politics in the geography of Middle East and Turkey?s suggestions to solve this problem arealsogiven.Keywords: Transbounboundary rivers, The Middle East, Tigris, Euphrates
