Analysis of leadership characteristics of secondary education institution principals: The case of Istanbul

The most important factor in shaping the future of society is the schools where education and training services are provided. Secondary education institutions also play an important role due to the task of preparing students for life and higher education. School principals are primarily responsible for the implementation of education and training. Secondary education institutions should be considered as a whole with elements such as students, teachers, parents and the external environment of the school. The school principal should think and manage the school with all its elements in order to be able to carry out the education in accordance with the aim. In addition to being a good and experienced educator, the school principal should provide motivation and harmony to all elements of the school with its leading characteristics. The harmonization between the school and its environment and the principal characteristics of the school principal will be an important factor in achieving the school's goals. In order to know the leader characteristics of the school principal and make a healthy analysis, the personality traits should be determined. In this study, firstly the historical development of secondary education institutions is discussed. Then the scientific literature on management and school management is discussed. The definitions and classifications related to leadership and personality are included in the study with reference to scientific studies. Leadership classification is based on nine types of leadership style, personality classification is based on EKÖ. In order to analyse the leadership characteristics of the principals, DLSÖ was applied. In addition, to determine personality types thought to have an impact on leadership, by applying EKÖ enneagram personality types were determined and its effect on leadership was investigated. The research was conducted with the voluntary participation of high school principals in Istanbul. As a result of the research, most of the relationships between leadership styles and personality types were found to be significant.
