Administrator and teachers' opinions about the causes of violence of high school students

Abstract (EN)

The recent news on both printed and mass media demonstrate that violence level in schools is profoundly worrying. In order to prevent violence occurring in schools, the reasons which cause violence behaviors need to be determined. This survey has been conducted in order to identify administrators and teachers opinions about the causes of violence of high school students. The population of this survey is comprised of administrators and teachers working in governmental high schools in Diyarbakır city center during 2011-2012 academic year. The number of high schools in the city center is 48. The total number of administrators is 251 and the number of teachers is 2194 who work in these schools. Various high schools (such as Regular High Schools, Vocational High Schools and Anatolian High Schools) have been chosen for sampling, and the data has been collected from 63 administrators and 549 teachers working in these schools. A measurement tool developed by Gemici (2008) which is consisted of 34 items was used for the survey. At the main study for this survey Cronbach Alpha reliability parameter was found as .93. For analyzing and interpretation the data collected via questionnaire; percentages, standard deviation, t-test, variance analysis (Anova) and the Scheffe Significance Test have been utilized. In data analysis 0.05 significance level has been taken as basis. According to the administrators? and teachers? opinion regarding the findings obtained from the survey, the causes of violence encountered at school are; insufficient attention and care for children by parents, child?s witnesses of violence inside the family. The Administrators? opinion "School management" according to the difference in the gender variable in size significantly. No significant difference by education level and seniority has been determined in teachers? opinion. Among administrators? and teachers? opinions significant differences have been detected in the aspect of ?Non-School Factors?. Significant differences according to gender have emerged in the aspect of ?School management? sub-dimension in teachers? opinion. Key Words: Violence, high school, administrator, teacher.
