Investigation of problematic internet usage and metacognitive strategi̇es of high school educati̇on students

The aim of this study is to investigate problematic internet usage and metacognitive strategies of secondary school students. In the research, screening model which is one of the quantitative research models was used. The sample of the study consist of 201 girls and 215 boys totaly 416 secondary school students from Şanlıurfa province. These students study in 7 different school types. Problematic Internet Usage Scale and Metacognitive Strategies Scale were used as data collection tools. Problematic İnternet Usage Scale was prepared in a 5 point likert type and consisted of 3 sub-factors. These are negative results of the internet, social benefit / social comfort, over use factors. Metacognitive Strategies Scale is a 7-point scale which is one of the main factors of Motivation and Learning Strategies. According to the results it's found that problematic internet usage, negative result of internet, social benefit / social comfort scores of the male students are significantly higher than family students. No significant difference was found in the over-use sub-factor according to gender. In metacognitive strategies, female students 'scores were significantly higher than male students' scores. When the school type variable is analyzed, it is seen that there are significant differences in problematic internet usage, negative results of internet, social benefit / social comfort and overuse results. However, there was no significant difference in metacognitive strategies. A low level of negative correlation was found between problematic internet use and metacognitive strategies.
