Analysing the internet addiction of middle school students according to manners of parents and communication skills

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between internet addiction and perceived parental attitudes and communication skills in secondary school students. In this study, correlational research method was used. Six schools were selected by random stratified sampling method among secondary schools of the Ministry of National Education in Çukurova, Seyhan and Yüreğir districts of Adana central districts. The sample of the study consisted of 612 students who attended the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades in the 2016-2017 academic year. In this study, "Personal Information Form", "Internet Addiction Scale", "Parenting Attitude Scale" and "Communication Skills Scale" were used to collect data. The datas collected from the measurement tools have been analyzed with independent samples t-test, one way anova and correlation analysis. According to scores of "Internet Addiction Scale"; the students have been seperated into three groups which named "Patological Internet User", "The Ones Showing Restricted Symptom" and "The Group Not Showing Symptom". According to the results of the analysis; no internet addicts were detected among the participants and the rate of students with limited symptoms was 7.68%. In the study, it was determined that the students' internet addiction scores differ significantly with gender, class, daily internet usage time, internet usage history and the age limit of the digital games they play. In the study; a significant correlation was found between the levels of internet addiction, manners of parents and comunication skills.
