The evaluation of implementation of elective courses in secondary school in accordance with the students'opinions (Gebze example)

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the implementation of elective courses to the weekly course schedule, which is being applied in secondary schools since 2012-2013 academic year, from the perspectives of students. This study is a depictive survey study. The approaches of students, teachers, parents and school administrations to the implementation of elective courses applied by the ministry were evaluated from the eyes of students.Domain of the study consists of the students who are in secondary schools in 2014-2015 academic year in Gebze, Kocaeli. Students are chosen to be the representatives of 4 different educational areas which are preparatory school, imam hatip secondary school, first and secondary schools in the same building, secondary school and village secondary school; by conducting this survey, opinions of 1123 students from 15 different schools were reached through questions of the survey. In this research, data was obtained from the "Personal Information Form" and "Survey of the Questions Related to Elective Courses". The survey was formed with the feedbacks taken from students and the transformation of problems that may be faced with during the implementation of elective courses in the schools. At the end of the survey, it was concluded that the elective courses which were considered to be well-functioning were paid attention as much as the must courses by school administration, teacher, parent and the student. It was concluded that the one who specified the questions of elective courses was found out and the student was considered to be the responsible authority. Also, in this assignation, the advices given by parents and teachers were taken into consideration and the courses applied in a different environment from the usual places helped students to have new friendships and co-operations by causing them to improve their self-reliance, interest and talents.
