A cross-national study on self-efficacy, motivation and pisa 2003 mathematics literacy: Turkey and Finland

In this study, a model was developed using self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and mathematics achievement on the basis of previous research results. The similarities and differences in this proposed model was investigated between Turkey and Finland. İn this investigation, the cause of coosing finland is that is the one of the most successful country in pisa 2003 application.The Programme for International Student Assessment 2003 mathematics achievement test and the student background questionnaire were used. This study involved a total of 9914 students including 4325 students in Turkey and 5589 students in Finland. The students had participated in Programme for International Student Assessment 2003 study.The data were analyzed by using SPSS and LISREL software packages. In exploratory factor analysis, self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation measures formed separate three scales as a result of principle component analysis. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence of the similar internal factor structure and similar effects among these factors and mathematics achievement across Turkey and Finland. As a result, this study found that self-efficacy was a strong predictor of mathematics achievement while intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation were not and also self-efficacy and extrinsic motivation were important predictors of intrinsic motivation.Keywords: Mathematic achievement, Intrinsic motivation, Extrinsic motivation, Self-efficacy, Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis
