Evaluation of orbital cellulite cases in the pediatric age group

Objective: It was aimed to evaluate the relationship between imaging techniques and clinical and laboratory parameters in pediatric periorbital cellulitis patients. Materials-Methods: 92 patients under 18 years of age with a confirmed diagnosis of preseptal cellulitis or orbital cellulitis were included in our study. Demographic, clinical, laboratory and radiological imaging findings of the patients were reviewed retrospectively from their file records. Results: Of the 92 cases, 53.3% were boys and 46.7% were girls. the mean age was 6.51±4.76 years. It was observed that 16 (17.4%) of the patients included in the study were treated as outpatients and 76 (82.6%) were treated as inpatients. It was determined that maxillary and ethmoidal involvement were the most common in patients. The most common presentation (87-78%) of the patients was hyperemia and edema, and the most common etiology (33.7%) was URI. Abscess was detected radiologically in 16 (59.2%) patients with orbital cellulitis. Among the hospitalized patients, the duration of hospitalization was significantly higher in patients with orbital cellulitis compared to those with preseptal cellulitis (p<0.05). WBC, NLR, CRP levels of the hospitalized and treated cases were statistically high (p<0.05). Considering the number of cases and factors, it was found that the factors in the vaccination schedule did not reproduce. Conclusion: As a result of our study, periorbital cellulitis and orbital cellulitis are diseases that can be seen quite frequently in childhood. Since the most common causes are URTI and sinusitis, early diagnosis and treatment are thought to reduce the length of hospital stay and the development of complications in these cases.
