The history of Baba Pasha

Pehlivan brahim Pasha, or in his other well known name Baba Pasha (died in 1820), have got an important place in the Ottoman history, especially at the beginning of the 19th century. Firstly, he has joined, as a young and volunteer man, to the war between Ottoman and Russia- Austria (1787-1792). At that war he atracted attention. Then he began a long and dense power struggle in Rumelia. He got senatorship of the Deliorman and Dobruja Region. The war which began between Ottoman and Russia in 1806 is one of the most important event in the life of Pehlivan brahim Pasha. n the zmail Castle, he has shown a great resistance, against Russian attack, for more three years. n all Ottoman land he was accepted an islamic hero and became famous. He played an important role, in defeating Russian army at Tatarisa, near Silistra, in 1809 October. As a result of his success, vizier rank has been given him by the Sultan. Nevertheless, he captived by Russian in 1810. After this captivation in Russia, he was released and came back to the land home during the end of 1812. Then he was come to the important duties by Sultan Mahmut II. He tried to establish central authority and prevent rebellion against the state. He supressed many rebellion movements that went on for many years. He became the governor of Sivas, Erzurum and Diyarbakır orderly. Baba Pasha whose viziership had been demoted in 1817 and had been forced to live in Bursa, wrote his important events, wars that he had joined from his youth. The History of Baba Pasha is an important resource. t was written by Abdullatif Efendi who was head of a dervish convent, Gazzi Dergahı, in Bursa and it was completed in 1820. n the History of Baba Pasha, there are many important events of Ottoman History by telling of persons who had lived or seen those events. By the all Ottoman historians, Baba Pasha was accepted as a hero, brave and devoted to the state. The History of Baba Pasha is based upon the explanations of Pehlivan brahim Pasha.
