The place of beauty in the community: Re-thinking Kant

This thesis is aimed to inquire into the changing conditions of our aesthetic experience in the face of contemporary art within the framework of a historical path. Kant's aesthetic theory is the source of the concept of aesthetic experience. Kant's aesthetic theory includes the judgement of beauty as well as subjectivity and objectivity. In the context of the historical path, this subjectivity-objectivity relationship, which originates from Kant, can also be read as an individual-society relationship. It is Kant's concept of common sense that places this reading within the framework of the individual-society relationship. Kant's parting of this concept from the 'common understanding' has enabled us to turn to the concept of 'community', which allows for the aesthetic field to be read through the field of politics. In parallel to this, Lyotard carried out a re-reading of Kant in the ethical field based on the feeling of the sublime. The significance of this reading of Lyotard for our thesis arises from the fact that it implements a split in the course we tried to create historically by way of the concept of meta-narrative. Next, Rancière emphasized the co-existence of art and politics, which enabled the expansion of our aesthetic experience of contemporary art. As political subjects, the individual-society relationship is based on dissensus rather than a consensus. When we consider art as a stimulus, Rancière's idea of the community as being together but apart becomes meaningful through the idea of the community we are trying to extract from Kant.
