Abstract (EN)
Thalassemia is part of a group of genetic diseases called hemoglobinopathy, which harms the normal production of the alpha and beta globin chains, which make up hemoglobin. In Latin America and the Caribbean, the incidence of thalassemia is heterogeneous. Health professionals face the care of thalassemia patients who have reached adulthood, due to advancing knowledge about the disease and the effects of treatments. Lifelong treatments for thalassemia major include the regular blood transfusions associated with iron chelate therapy. Although palliative, implementing repeated blood transfusion therapy enables patients to develop normally and improve their quality of life, until reaching the age of adulthood. this study determines the assessment of the quality of life and the level of the social support provided to thalassemia patients In AL Nasiriyah, Iraq 2021, and it is a descriptive study. As a non-experimental design, the sample was conducted using non-probability intentional data type with 200 patients, the questionnaire was used on the subject of social support provided to patients, and the quality of life. SPSS version 25 program was used to develop databases and statistical tables. Regarding the quality of life of thalassemia patients, out of 200 patients (41.5%) obtained a high quality of life while (58%) of the sample obtained a low quality of life in relation to social support, (46.15%) received social support, while (53.84%) did not receive social support. If the patient's lifestyle and his coexistence with the disease do not change, a high quality of life will not be achieved for him, and this, in turn, will lead to a deterioration in the quality of life of these patients. The social support provided by family and friends must also be increased in order to improve patients' quality of life.
