Negation in Rabguzi's Kısasül-Enbi̇ya

In this study, negation was evaluated as a category of grammar based on the Kısasü'l-enbiya (1310 A.D., 710 A.H.), a historical writing significant enough to be representative on its own of Khwarezm Turkish in the Middle Turkish period. Four main morpho-syntactic and lexical negation marker identified in the Kısasü?l-enbiya were analyzed in the sample texts, and the grammatical units and structures that contributed to a meaning of negation were also discussed. Semantic features and functions of the bound morphemes -mA- and +sXz along with the morphemes ermez/s and yoú, which we consider as main (and explicit) negation markers, were examined based on their structural characteristics. Aside from negation markers and the explicit negations in surface structures, structures which lacked signs of structural negation, yet indicated negation in a more deep structure were considered; however, implicit negations were included into the scope of the study to the extent that they were associated. This thesis consists of 5 main sections that follow the Abstract, Preface, Table of Contents, List of Tables, List of Figures and the Document Translation Signs sections of the thesis. In Section II, entitled Introduction provides a discussion of the subject, objective and methods of the study. In Section II, entitled A Theoretical Approach to Negation, a broad theoretical framework was delineated, and negation was considered from a multi-disciplinary perspective and approach. Section III, entitled The Marking of Negation in Kısasü'l-enbiya, The Morpho-syntactic Characteristic of Negation in the Kısasü'l-enbiya emphasizes in detail the elements of verb negation, noun negation and negative polarity items in the Kısasü'l-enbiya. In this section, sentential negation, constituent negation and negative polarity items in the Kısasü'l-enbiya were evaluated within the context of sentential and constituent negation. In Section IV, entitled The Morpho-semantic Characteristic of Negation in the Kısasü'l-enbiya, elements of multiple negation, double negation, negative concord and implicative negation in the KE were evaluated according to the theoretical framework detailed in Section II. The Thesis is concluded with the Result, References, Explanatory Glossary of Concepts and Terms, and the Negation Corpus of the Kısasü?l-enbiya sections.
