Relationship between interleukin 1-β cytokine gene polymorphism and pain, functional status, and spinal flexibility in lumbar degenerative disc disease

This study aims to investigate the relationship between interleukin 1-β cytokine gene polymorphism and pain, functional status and spinal flexibility in LDDD. The study included 50 patients (24F,26M;39.90±8.70 years) and 44 healthy volunteers (28F,16M;37.02±9.6 years) who were diagnosed with LDDD by the Neurosurgeon. Pain levels of the patient group were evaluated with VAS and their functional status was evaluated with ODI. Spinal flexibility was evaluated with the Modified Schober method and digital inclinometer. Genotyping of IL-1 β of both groups was determined by real-time PCR. As a result of our study, no statistically significant relationship was found between the patient group and the control group in terms of genotype analysis (p = 0.734). No statistically significant relation was found with genotype analysis of the patient group in terms of pain, functional status and spinal flexibility (p> 0.05). However, according to the MRI results of the patient group, it was found that individuals carrying TT genotype had higher TDDS. Carrying the T allele increased the risk of serious TDDS 5 times (p = 0.043) (OR = 5.037; CI 95%= 0,951-26,692). At the same time, the CC genotype was observed to be more protective than transport (p = 0.029) (OR = 10; CI 95% = 0.015-0.67). It was determined that T allele increased the need for treatment. (p = 0.029); (OR = 10; 1.493-66.989). Our study results showed that the level of TDDS and IL-1 β gene polymorphism in individuals with LDDD. No significant relation was found in terms of pain, functional and spinal flexibility. Functional studies should be carried out to determine LDDD gene polymorphisms and clinical reflections, as well as case-control studies of the Turkish community with larger case series.
