Abstract (EN)
Cancer of the breast is the second most common cause of mortality from the disease in females. Because the kidneys are the primary location where medications are eliminated from the body, this organ is subjected to high quantities of chemotherapeutics, together with the active and inactive metabolites of the treatments, which often results in nephrotoxicity. Approximately 60 women with breast cancer who were undergoing chemotherapy, as well as 30 apparently healthy women, were enrolled in this case-control study. During this study, biochemical kidney markers such as cystatin C, creatinine blood urea, and microalbuminuria, as well as GFR, were assessed in order to investigate the impact of chemotherapy and how it reflects on renal functions. During the course of this research, a difference in the mean of these renal biochemical markers was discovered that was statistically significant with a p-value of less than 0.001, in addition to a positive correlation between albumin/creatinine ratio with microalbuminuria as well as glomerular filtration rate, and in contrast, a negative correlation was found with creatinine. As conclusion: the difference between the rise in cystatin C levels and kidney function as well as the reduction in GFR is a strong indicator of the degree to which chemotherapy affects the kidneys in breast cancer patients.
