The effect of the Role Performance Strengthening Program based on the roy adaptation model on the adaptive performance and competency of nurses working in pandemic units

Objective: The aim of the research is to examine the effect of "Role Performance Strengthening Program" based on the Roy Adaptation Model on the competence and adaptive performance of nurses working in pandemic units during the Covid-19 pandemic. Method: The research is an emancipatory mixed methods action research based on radical humanist paradigm. The research was conducted with 10 nurses working in the pandemic units of Akdeniz University Hospital who volunteered to participate in the research. The research process consisted of four stages. Data were collected with Personal Information Form, Nurse Competence Scale, Adaptive Performance Scale, and Role Performance Strengthening Program semi-structured interview forms. In line with the quantitative and qualitative data collected, "Role Performance Strengthening Program", a psychoeducational program based on the Roy Adaptation Model, was developed and implemented. One and four weeks after the implementation, the nurses' competence and adaptive performance were re-evaluated. Results: The total mean score of nurses' competence was 72.17 before the action, 90.81 after the action, and 95.74 in the follow-up. The total mean score of nurses' adaptive performance was 3.78 before the action, 4.50 after the action, and 4.93 in the follow-up. It was found that after the action, the competence and adaptive performance of nurses increased significantly compared to before the action; and in the follow-up, the competence was preserved compared to after the action and the adaptive performance was significantly higher. Conclusion: "Role Performance Strengthening Program" based on the Roy Adaptation Model increases the competence and adaptive performance of nurses. It has been found that the Roy Adaptation Model is suitable for use in research to be conducted on a nurse sample in coping with the difficulties caused by Covid-19. It is recommended that the Role Performance Strengthening Program be included in institutional training programs.
