Abstract (EN)
This study examines the impact of Russian modernization, which gained momentum in the late XIXth and early XXth centuries, on the Kazan Turks, through a historical and sociological lens within the framework of modernization theory. Modernization is treated not merely as a reflection of the era's spirit of transformation, but as a sequence of phenomena involving political centralization, institutional change, bureaucratic rationality, and the rise of nationalism. The Russian state's evolution from a loose network of principalities to a centralized Muscovite regime and ultimately a modern empire unfolded through an authoritarian, top-down model that diverged from Western European experiences. This process had a particularly transformative impact on Muslim Turkic populations in the Volga-Ural region, subjecting Kazan Turks to the increasing control of a centralizing state. In this context, both the Jadidist movement and the emerging ideology of Turkism are addressed as key responses to Russian political modernity. Especially after the 1905 Revolution, the Kazan Turkish intelligentsia initiated an indigenous modernization project through education, the press, and intellectual activity. Meanwhile, modernization and reform indirectly facilitated the rise of a Turkic-Tatar bourgeoisie, and the ideological currents after 1850 left a profound mark on the Tatar intellectual class. These developments contributed to the formation of a national imagination and a sense of historical belonging through the framework of Turkism. The study analyzes the Kazan Turks evolving relationship with a transforming state and society from an interdisciplinary perspective.
