Health professionals the relationship between honor perception and gender roles

Objective: This thesis study has been conducted to reveal the bonds between the honor perceptions and gender roles of health professionals in addition to determining the factors affecting these concepts among health professionals. Method: The study was conducted with the help of 194 health professionals, working in a state hospital. The data of the study were obtained with face-to-face meetings in July-September 2023 through several surveys: "Health Professional Information Form", "Gender Roles Attitude Scale (GRAS)", and "Honor Concept Perception Toward Women Scale (HCPTWS)". The data are assessed by using SPSS 24.0 package program. Results: Among the professionals participating in the surveys, 73.2% were women, 64.9% were married, 34% were between ages 26-32, 60.8% had a bachelor's degree, 53.6% were nurses, 31.4% had a service time between 1-5 years. GRAS and HCPTWS total point averages are found as 156.08±19.24 and 103.59±16.09, respectively. A strong, positive-sided correlation is found between GRAS and HCPTWS metrics (r=0.79 ρ<0.05). Among the professionals, the greatest average of GRAS is found in the context of gender roles in marriage, whereas the greatest average of HCPTWS is found in the sub-context of the egalitarian approach. It is found that the scale total average score of nurses and midwives was higher than that of physicians, the average score of female health professionals was higher than that of men, and the average score of health professionals under the age of 40 was higher than that of those aged 40 and over (all with statistical significance). Conclusion: The health professionals generally had an egalitarian sense of honor and gender roles. As the health professionals held more egalitarian gender role ideas, their sense of honor perception and attitudes towards women tended to increase. The biological sex, age, marital status, and years of service affected the scores for gender role attitudes and honor concept perception. Key words: sense of honor, gender, nurse, midwife, doctor
