Jewelry as art object

The transformation of the art and craft movement, which was led by William Morris at the end of the 19th century, to the jewelry field and the stereotypical perception of the craft led to a transformation process in the jewelry field. This understanding, in which the importance of handicraft is emphasized, has long prevailed in the field of jewelry. This process was carried out in the direction of Bauhaus school. With many artists and designers who have undergone the Bauhaus education, the foundation of modern jewelery has been laid, and jewelry has now become a place for the gallery's space. In the 1960s, the material of the jewelery was changed, the concept of jewelry, the ergonomics and form of the jewelery were questioned and the foundations of a new jewelry concept were laid. The artists from different disciplines such as painting and sculpture produced their products in the field of jewelry, and paved the way for questioning the new understanding of the jewelry and transforming it into an object of art. The new concept of jewelry has expanded its scope through galleries and pioneering art schools. The artists who established the relationship between individual, experimental and body jewelry in the field of jewelry and production of the artists destroyed the barriers between art and jewelry. These jewelry artists, who cared about the interaction with different disciplines such as sculpture, installation, performance and art, put the artistic aspect of the jewelery to the forefront. Today, the works of jewelry artists who produce works that can be gathered under the title of art jewelry, are distinguished from form and conceptual perceptions from definitions such as bijouterie, jewelery and fashion accessories. In this context, when the jewelry and art were united, the traditional patterns had been demolished or changed as in ancient times the form to define a new identity and the jewelry became an art object.
