Abstract (EN)

Mir'ât-ı Vuku'ât-ı Harbiye is a work written by Selanikli Tevfik, which focuses on the 1897 Ottoman-Greek War. This piece is of great importance for research on the war that took place in 1897 between the Ottoman Empire and Greece. This scholarly opus delves into various facets of the conflict, the previous history of war, its causes, the state of affairs in the Island of Crete, the involvement of European powers, the Ottoman Empire's approach towards the war, the course of the hostilities, and the subsequent peace negotiations. Within the introductory section of the work, attention is directed towards the uprisings on the Island of Crete, which acted as a catalyst for the war between the Ottoman Empire and Greece, shedding light on the disputes that precipitated the conflict. The first section delineates the military preparations made in anticipation of the war, the logistical arrangements involved, and a comprehensive narration of the unfolding of the conflict. The second section comprehensively addresses the subsequent armistice and preliminary peace agreements reached in the aftermath of the war. Notably, the author supplements the text with strategically placed illustrations that visually contextualize the individuals and locations pertinent to the subject matter. The aim of transcribing and evaluating this work is to enable researchers to benefit more from it. Furthermore, it is targeted to better understand the 1897 Ottoman-Greek War. In the evaluation section, how Selanikli Tevfik relayed the events related to the war to his readers and his commentary on these events have been addressed.
