Coinage of Seleucid Kingdom and two hoards from Şanlıurfa Museum

In this study, two coin hoards housed in Şanlıurfa Museum will be examined; the first consists of bronze issues of the Seleucid Kingdom and the second contains silver issues minted in the name of Seleucid King Philippos Philadelphos I posthumously during the Roman period. These hoards are examined in the light of Seleucid Coinage in general. After the death of Alexander III in 323 BC, the rule of the Macedonian Empire was divided among his generals (Diadochoi). One of these generals, Seleucus I Nicator founded the Seleucid Kingdom in the Eastern parts of the Macedonian Empire. This kingdom with its centre in Northern Syria existed until a last part of it was converted into a Roman Province (Provicia Syria) in 64 BC.
