Abstract (EN)

The production, consumption and trade of liquor, which Islam has forbidden, in other words, intoxicating liquor, by today's discourse, was forbidden by Muslims. This was the basic approach in which the Ottomans showed no concessions. Despite this, some Muslims could not be prevented from drinking. Non-Muslims, on the other hand, were able to consume and trade liquor, on the condition that it was not publicly, thanks to the rights granted to them. They also opened taverns to sell to non-Muslims only, provided they were in their own neighborhoods. The state provided income from taxes, an important component of its economy. At this point, the state was also taxing non-Muslim's produce. Although it is an area of income, it must be stated that in the XVI and XVII centuries there was also Prohibition of drinking and therefore the closure of taverns. These prohibitions, sometimes for religious or sometimes political reasons, were not long-term and covered certain periods of time. Besides the economic and legal aspects of the issue, there was also a social dimension. Because drunkenness and taverns could also negatively affect human and community health. Historical documents and informations clearly showed that there were drunkenness, that is, violent incidents in drunkenness, various crimes were committed, and there were problems in family life. Ultimately, in this study, drink in Istanbul in XVI and XVII century is discussed with its religious, economic, legal and social dimensions. The production, consumption and trade of the drink are evaluated in various aspects and the drinkers and the places where they drink and what is considered in this bet are examined.
