The use of travel books in scoial studies course

History topics have an important position and function in social studies course. Travel books have the feature of being a first-hand source as history document and also literary genre. It is possible for the 5th, 6th and 7th grade students of secondary education to attain a historical awareness and mentality within the framework of the Social Studies course with the efffective and efficient teaching of this course. Travel books are a document from historical evidence or a living witness. In the terms of this feature of travels books, It is important to use them in the classroom environment. This study aims to reveal how much travel books are included in textbooks, and what local and foreing travel books can be used in teaching history subjects, to what extent travel books are included in Social Studies curriculum, what are learning outcomes, what topics are related to travel books. In the research, The travel books of Ruy Gonzales de Clajivo named Anatolia, Central Asia and Timur, Busbecq's Turkish Letters, Edmand de Amicis' Istanbul, Bela Horvath's Anatolia 1913 were read, and it was tried to determine which learning outcomes could be used in Social Studies lesson teaching. In the study area of the research, 4 travel books selected from the non-random sampling group, selected according to the maximum diversity sampling with the purposeful sampling method, were read. In addition, learning outcomes in the 5th, 6th and 7th grade Social Studies curriculum constitute the social studies program and social studies textbooks. At the stage of data collection, social studies textbooks, Social Studies program and 4 travels books will be examined by the researchers and the content of the travel books will be analyzed. In the research, case study that is one of the qualitative research methods was used and the data obtained were determined through document analysis. Meaning, definition and purpose of Social Studies have been stated in order to explain the theoretical basis of the research. The historical development of Social Studies and the definition of travel books have been researched and explained in detail. The sources used in the research are shown in the bibliography and the research has been completed. As a result of the research, it was determined that the 7th grade social studies curriculum was associated with the learning outcome in the field of Culture and Heritage. It is seen that the subject is handled with quotations from local and foreign travelers in the course book. Various suggestions were made depending on the results obtained from the research.
