An investigation of adolescents that resort to violence and others that do not in terms of degree of loneliness and peer pressure

The purposes of this study is (a) to evaluate and compare the degree of loneliness of adolescents that go to a high-school and show disapproved behaviors such as fighting, injuring, swearing with those of other adolescents that do not show such behavior. The other main purpose of the investigation is (a) to determine and compare the level of peer influence on adolescents that resort to violence and that do not. The sampling is consisted of the students that attend a high-school (n= 507) in the area of Adana Major Municipality. While %51.5 of this sampling (n= 260) consist of the adolescents that resort to violence, %48.5 of it (n= 245) consist of the adolescent that do not resort to violence. In the investigation, to determine the level of adolescents? loneliness, ?UCLA? (University of California Los Angeles Loneliness Scale) is used while ?Esen? (2002) Peer Pressure Scale (ABÖ) is used to determine the level of peer influence on adolescents. The results indicated that adolescents that use violence feel more loneliness that other adolescents. That is to say, adolescents who resort to violence feel loneliness more deeply than other adolescents. What is more, it is indicated that adolescents that use violence are more imposed to peer pressure than the others. Briefly, adolescents thatIn the investigation these are found as well: The level of peer pressure on boys is stronger than the peer effect on girls (U=12950; p<.001). The girls? level of loneliness is lower that the boys? (t (503) =2.02; p<.05). It is founded that there is .26 correlation between the point of Peer Pressure Scale (ABÖ) and University of California Los Angeles Loneliness Scale (UCLA). This correlation?s coefficient is expressive on the degree of .01 (p=.000). While there is not a strong difference between the education levels of the adolescents that resort to violence and others, there is a strong differences between the education level of the fathers. There is not found any different factor that cause adolescents use violence in terms of status level and family income.
