Socio-cultural resources of violence and its presentation via media texts

Dr. Filiz SUSAR March 2014 – 97 Pages The violence is a case which arises within the society and is learnt as a cultural object. As main types, violence arises in various forms such as physical, psychological, economic, and sexual. Evaluating the resources constituting the violence, it is seen that socio-cultural and economic resources of violence are more effective than its biologic and psychological resources. Considering the socio-cultural and economic resources, mass-communication tool have the biggest share in whole world. Violence is presented to society via every kind of media texts, and the society sometimes follows and sometimes is exposed to it. Media has become one of the leading tools of socialization as a result of technological developments. TV is nowadays the most easy-to-access and the widest media tool. The penetration of TV among large segments and its easy-to-access position have given a social and cultural power to it. TV has an important effect on individuals, society and culture. In this study where we examined the presentation of violence via media texts, the "Güneşi Beklerken" TV series has been chosen as sample among youth series. The message analysis step, one of two steps of Gerbner's Cultivation thesis, has been implemented on that TV series. For message analyzing, the content analysis has been implemented on all episodes of mentioned TV series until the ending date of this study. By coding the message specifications, which have been analyzed and digitalized, into categories, we tried to explain the cultivation in TV series. As a result of performed analysis, we have tested the problems which we revealed in accordance with the aims we hoped to achieve. Keywords: Violence, Culture, Media, Socialization, Youth
