Language analysis on place names of Siirt

In this thesis, the names of the settlements in Siirt and its distr In this study, the names of the settlements in Siirt and its districts located in the Tigris Basin section of the Southeastern Anatolia Region In Siirt, which has an ancient history in Anatolia and has been home to many civilizations, the names of villages and neighborhoods were changed for various reasons at the beginning of the 1960s. In the current research, it is aimed to examine the old place names, which are more suitable for scientific foundations, as well as the names of newly established settlements in terms of structure, origin and meaning, and to determine the reasons for these names.In this study, which includes the names of towns, neighborhoods, villages, streets, streets and other districts of the central district of Siirt, scanning and compilation method was used. In total, 382 place names were examined out of 426 place names, and place names of Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Kurdish, Armenian and Syriac origin were found among these names. It has been observed that names based on people and communities, as well as natural and physical conditions, are effective for naming these places. In the "Introduction" part of the study, besides the subject, problem, purpose, importance, method, assumption and limitations of the research; definitions and studies on the subject are included. In Part I, information is given about the historical and geographical location of Siirt and its districts, and the meanings and origins of their names are emphasized. In addition, information was given about the important tribes that lived in the province. In the second part, comprehensive information is given about toponomy, classification and modification of place names. In the third Chapter, 382 place names were analyzed as simple, derived and combined in terms of structure, and 44 place names whose origins and meanings could not be reached were listed and shown. Conclusion and Suggestions" section focused on the data obtained as a result of the research and suggestions were made for possiblestudies.
