Abstract (EN)
As a result of the civil war in Syria in 2011, millions of Syrians were forced to migrate to other countries. An important part of the migrating population has gradually entered Turkey and the continuation of political instability in Syria has led to a prolonged length of stay in Turkey. Syrians, whose social status is uncertain, started to be named after different concepts such as "immigrant", "asylum seeker" and "refugee". In this process, the overview of the local people and the Syrian perception appear to be adversely affected by the effect of changing socio-economic conditions in Turkey. The content and language used in social media point to the increasing hate speech and xenophobia against Syrians in recent years. In this thesis, an analysis on Twitter platform how hate speech against Syrians is produced in social media channels, where it is easier to follow, spread and share compared to traditional media. The period between January 1, 2019 and June 1, 2020 was taken as a basis for the analysis of Twitter posts on Syrians, which have been produced against Syrians from digital platforms and have increased in recent years, taking into account the long period of immigration movement and the volume of the study. 65 posts covering this time period were selected as the sample. In the first part, the concepts of hate language, speech and xenophobia are emphasized. In this section, discussions on hate speech are included; discrimination, prejudice and stereotype concepts are defined and differences between them are presented. By focusing on different types of the concept of hate speech, how hate speech turns into a hate crime is explained. In the rest of the first part, the concept of xenophobia is defined and the elements of xenophobia, such as provocation, hatred, and illegality, are explained. In the second part, in which xenophobia and hate speech issues in the media are examined, the relationship between media, ideology and discourse is discussed, and how xenophobia and hate speech production in the media occurs. In this section, the hate speech produced by focusing on the concepts of traditional media and social media is discussed with examples. In the third part, the issue of hate crime and xenophobia against Syrians is covered. After discussing the reasons for migration of Syrians and mentioning the way the issue is reflected in the media, it is investigated how hate speech and xenophobia emerged through social media messages. The reflection of xenophobia and hate speech on social media is evaluated through the examples taken on Twitter. The posts in the study were analyzed under three headings: "Hate Speech Developed Against Those Who Help Syrians", "Hate Speeches Developed by Organizations Against Syrians" and "Hate Speeches Against Syrians Through Individual Accounts". Critical discourse analysis method was used to analyze Twitter posts which contain hate content and discriminatory statements regarding this scope; how hate speech is produced and spread has been identified and discussed.
