Temple of Apollo in sura and related cult ruins

Sura, which is located in Demre district in Antalya and is a settlement is a temple neighbourhood connected to Myra . While the name of the settlement is mentioned as "Surezi" on an inscription on rock grave dated to Classical Period, it is mentioned as "Soura" in Greek inscriptions . The fame of Sura comes from the cult of Apollo Surios and cult area also mentioned in the inscriptions. There are many ancient written expressions about the cult and we have information about cult rituals by these expressions . The cult area consists of four parts as Area of Priests, Road of Priests, Spring / Oracle Pool and Sura Temple. All of these areas are in an organic connection with each other. There are stela reliefs on which list of Apollon Surios priests was written in Area of Priests which was formed by being bordered an open area by bedrock. There is a road preserved of 92 steps which starts from Area of Priests, reaches into the temple in the valley. After reaching the valley with Road of Priests and ongoing path, the spring on the eastern slope of the valley is reached. The feature differentiating this spring from other four springs is that surrounding of the spring was enclosed by walls and a pool was formed. In the center of the valley, on a level with this spring there are Apollon Surios Temple, which has a Doric order, in antis plan and is preserved up to block of triglyph-metope.
