Abstract (EN)

'The modern story' emerged in Europe in the eighteenth century. It made its first appearance in Turkey in the nineteenth century, but it would reach its climax here in the 1950s.The literature magazine, Seçilmiş Hikâyeler Dergisi, was published in Ankara between the years 1947 and 1957 by the well known literary figure, Salim Şengil. The magazine was responsible for cultivating a generation of skilled Turkish authors including Orhan Kemal, Nezihe Meriç, Sait Faik Abasıyanık, Şahap Sıtkı İlter, Memduh Şevket Esendal, Vüs'at O. Bener, Fahri Erdinç, Bilge Karasu, İlhan Tarus, Orhan Duru, Halikarnas Balıkçısı, Samim Kocagöz, Selim İleri, and so on. Most of these authors published their first stories in this historical magazine. In the 1950s the policy of the political party, CHP, focused on educating the public, particularly on issues related to the countrysides of Turkey. In tandem with this policy, in their novels, stories and poems, many writers attempted to educate people about the day to day life of the Turkish people, often supporting literary movements like 'socialist realism.'However, the Turkish Republic then put large amounts of effort into shaping the political views of the people through both literature and education. This had a marked effect on the population and understanding this intervention is essential to understanding the period from 1950 to the present day. The thesis of the present study is that analyzing the stories of authors such as Nezihe Meriç, Orhan Kemal, Şahap Sıtkı İlter, Salim Şengil and Fahri Erdinç provides a window into the history of Turkish literature, Turkey's democratic period and the important relationship between the two.
