Abstract (EN)
Aim: In this study was to investigate periodontal status of thalassemia major and total antioxidan status (TAS), ferritin and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels of serum, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva comparatively. Methods and Materials: This study consist 73 individuals aged between 11- 16 was divided in to 3 groups; Groups TMS: periodontally healty 23 patient with thalassemia major, Group TMG: 25 patient with gingivitis and thalassemia major, and Group K: gingival and systemically healthy of 25 individuals. The study had anacceptace from ethics committee of Dicle University, Faculty of Dentistry (2009/22), and every individual were informed about purpose and method of the study also by giving a signed acceptance. Firstly Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI) and Probing Depth (PD) data of individuals comprehending the study were recorded. For serum samples 5 cc blood was taken from antecubital region of front arm of every individual. At the same time 4 samples of GCF were taken from maxillar incisives of every individual by collected with standart Periopaper strips. For saliva samples; unstimulated total salia were collected in every morning. All serum, GCF and saliva samples were protected in -800C until ferritin, MDA and TAS levels were investigated in laboratory of Biochemistry Department of Medicine Faculty, Dicle University. Results: In total mouth comparing TMG group with K and TMS groups; GI, PI, PD and GCF volume values were higher in TMG group as expected (p<0.001). As evaluating TMS and TMG groups in comprasion with K group; in ferritin, MDA and TAS values of both GCF and serum statistically significant differences weredetermined (P<0.05). As TMS and TMG groups were compared; statistically no significant difference was found between two groups according to biochemical parameters (p>0.05). No corelation was found in the clinical and biochemical parameters investigated in serum, saliva and GCF of TMG and TMS groups (p>0.05). In addition, in TMG and TMS groups, between serum&GCF ferritin and serum&GCF MDA enzyme activities a correlation was determined (p<0.01).Conclusion: In this, relatively few patients including, study it was reached to a result that thalassemia major was not a direct risk factor in formation of gingivitis. In the future it is needed to investigate the relationship between more severe periodontal disease and thalassemia major in different age groups.
