Abstract (EN)

Protective military clothing has a special place in the history of costume. The origins of military clothing go deep into history. Military clothing, defined as protective "cover" clothing, is used to protect the body from physical attacks. Similarity in the appearance of military attire is noticeable in many of the ancient civilizations, meaning that Egyptian, Assyrian, Greek, and Roman soldiers were similarly dressed and armed. Starting from Egypt, Babylon and Assyria, Crete and Mycenae, Ancient Greece and Rome, protective military clothing has been studied for centuries, reaching the protective clothing characteristics of the medieval period and gradually approaching the appearance of contemporary protective clothing. In this study, it is aimed to examine the military clothes and document the changes from the beginning of the Tanzimat period to the proclamation of the Republic (1839-1923). Thanks to this study, it is important both in terms of keeping our culture alive and guiding designers who want to work in this field. Document analysis, one of the qualitative analysis methods, was used in the research. In the data collection process, military museums and libraries were used as well as online resource scanning. During the examination process, the reform movements in the periods of the Ottoman sultans II.Mahmut, Abdulmecid, Abdulaziz and II.Abdülhamit were analyzed according to their chronological structure. As a result II. Mahmud, in the 1828 Regulations, which is a very radical dress reform, stated that the clothes that employees from the sultan to the lowest-ranking official, from the military to the civilians will wear in their own apartments and in their daily lives, and that these are important. Reforms soon became widespread among the people. Comprehensive and permanent innovations and applications in the field of clothing were created by Sultan Abdülmecit, Sultan Abdülaziz and II. It continued during the reign of Abdülhamet, and the sultans contributed to their adoption by the people by setting an example with the clothes they wore.
