Abstract (EN)

In Turkish society, marriage changes woman's life more than man's life. At the same time marriage establishes new types of kinship. In the kinship relations established by marriage, women's relationships have been subject of biased narratives. In particular, there is an opinion in society that the bride and mother-in-law can not get along. Negative bride and mother-in-law relationships are reflected in television programs. Nowadays, bride-mother-in-law themed contest programs are also very popular. Brides and mother-in-laws have usually been represented through traditional roles and gender roles in bride-mother-in-law themed competition programs broadcast on television. Within these representations, the bride and mother-in-law relations have been established in accordance with traditional patriarchal values and gender roles. The aim of this study is to examine how bride-mother-in-law relations are presented in the context of patriarchy, gender and family values in television programs. In the theoretical part of the study, the concept of mass communication, the functions of mass media, the historical and legal development of television, the family institution and its types, gender concept, the institution of marriage, the relationship between the bride and the mother-in-law were discussed in different aspects. In this context, the programs named "Damat Bayıldı", "Zahide Yetiş'le Gelin Görün", "Gelinim Mutfakta" which were selected from consecutive years by the typical case sampling method were examined.
