Abstract (EN)

Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the antioxidant composition, antibacterial activities and histological and immunohistochemical effects of Thymbra Spicata (Zahter) and Cyclotrichium Origanifolium (Mountain Mint) plants on palatal wound healing in rats. Material and Method: For this purpose, an excisional wound area of 4 mm in diameter was created in the palatal mucosa of 84 Wistar albino male rats aged 8-10 weeks. The subjects were divided into 3 equal groups as control group (K), Thymbra Spicata (TS) and Cyclotrichium Origanifolium (CO) and were sacrificed on the 3rd, 7th, 14th and 21st days. In histopathological evaluation; Vascularization, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN), collagen degeneration, fibrosis, VEGF and vimentin parameters were measured. The antioxidant activities of the extracts were measured by DPPH free radical scavenging method, ABTS cation radical scavenging activity and CUPRAC method. The effects on Streptococcus Mitis and Aggregatibacter Actinomycetemcomitans bacteria were also investigated by agar well diffusion method. Results: According to the results of the statistical analysis, VEGF values of the TS and CO groups were found to be significantly higher at 3,7,14 and 21 days compared to the K group. When examined in terms of vimentin values, it was determined that the values in the TS group were higher at 7, 14 and 21 days compared to the K and CO groups, and the values at 14 and 21 days were statistically significant. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of vascularization, PMN, collagen degeneration and fibrosis values. In antioxidant evaluation; TS and CO extracts were found to be active as antioxidants. In addition, TS and CO extracts were found to have an antibacterial effect on S. Mitis, but not on A. Actinomycetemcomitans. Conclusion: According to the results of the study, it was seen that Thymbra Spicata (TS) plant had a positive effect on palatal wound healing in rats and Cyclotrichium Origanifolium (CO) plant was moderately effective. In addition, it was determined that both plant species showed antibacterial activity on S.Mitis. Keywords: Thymbra Spicata, Cyclotricium Origanifolium, wound healing, antioxidant, antibacterial
