The effect of mental social skills training on quality of life social functioning and treatment compliance of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia in the Community Mental Health Centre

This study aims to determine the mental social skills training on quality of life, social functioning and treatment compliance of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia in the Community Mental Health Centre. The research was conducted as a randomized controlled experimental study. The study was conducted on a total of 60 schizophrenia patients, 30 of whom were included in the Experimental Group whilst the other 30 were included in the Control Group, who were registered to the Community Mental Health Centre at Gaziantep University Şahinbey Research and Application Hospital. Data were collected between the dates 20 December 2022 and 20 June 2023. In the collection of data, Personal Information Forms, World Health Organisation Quality of Life Scales, Modified Morisky Treatment Compliance Scales and Social Functioning Assessment Scales were used. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews. Psychosocial Social Skills Training was conducted 3 times per week, in 24 sessions of 45 minutes each, in the form of group training. Analyses were carried out using the SPSS 22.0 Programme. It is determined that there is no statistically significant difference between the Experimental Group and Control Group patients according to sociodemographic variables (p>0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between the pre-test and post-test mean scores of the World Health Organisation Quality of Life Scale, Modified Morisky Treatment Compliance Scale and Social Functioning Assessment Scale in the experimental group patients (p<0.05). In the Control Group of patients, it was determined that there were not any statistically significant differences between the pre-tests and post-tests. (p>0,05) It is determined that Psychosocial Skills Training has a positive effect on the Quality of Life, Treatment Compliance and Social Functioning of patients, who are suffering from schizophrenia. In Community Mental Health Centres, it is recommended to ensure the dissemination and continuity of Psychosocial Skills Training in patients suffering from schizophrenia.
