Abstract (EN)

This study discusses the gender-basedwomen-men inequality within the framework of rock music and focuses on understanding Şebnem Ferah, a rock music performer. The thesis, in which the impact of male-dominant structure and consumption-based policies of popular music industry on Şebnem Ferah's musical identity is evaluated as well as the gender context of lyrics, is composed of three parts: While the first section provides a theoretical framework on the identity of women within the framework of gender, feminist movement and post-modernism approaches, the second part discusses the impact of gender on behavior and the practices of women in the field of music and specifically within the scope of gender in music; and examines the Turkish music and the image of women in rock music in the course of history. The third part, which focuses on Şebnem Ferah, examines her struggle to exist as a woman in rock music, her characteristics that impact shaping her musical identity, the relationship of her lyrics with gender, her musical identity and unique sound.
