Abstract (EN)

The early diagnosis of hipocalsemia with parathormonedetermination after total thyroidectomyIntroduction and aim: The effective measure parameter inpostoperative period of patients that treated with total thyroidectomy allowssafely discharge of patients in 24 hours.Materials and Methods: 50 patients who have treated with totalthyroidectomy for benign thyroid disease or thyroid carcinoma were rewivedfor demographyc features, preoperative and postoperative İntact PTH andcalcium levels prospectively.Results: Off 50 patients, 13 (%26) had symptomatic hypocalcemiathat treated with calcium intravenously and treatment continued with calciumorally. Because of permanent hypocalcemia in 2 of 13 patients 1,5 mcgCalsitriol was added the treatment of hypocalcemia. In one patient, steroidteraphy tarted for restriction of fonation due to odema of vocal cord. Therewas no statatistically diference in postoperative level of PTH and calciumbetween benign thyroid disease and thyroid cancer patients. There waspositive correlation between postoperative PTH and Ca level that measuredfirst there day. Similarly magnesium level was low in symptomatichypocalcemic patients. The number of female patients were statisticallysignificant higher than males.Conclusion: Eveluation of iPTH is effective for early diagnosis ofsymptomatic hypocalcemia following total tyroidectomy. The routine use ofthis method allows discharge of the patients safely and early treatment ofpatients that probably will devolop hypocalcemia.Key words; Total thyroidectomy, hypocalcemia, parathormone
