Evaluation of DMF-t index and caries prevalance of 3-6 year-old children in Trabzon

Early childhood caries (ECC) is a complex, multifactorial and cronic disease but it is preventable. It is known that the data related with ECC in Turkey has been obtained from children older than six year-old and the number of researches is quite a few. The aim of this study is to evaluate the caries prevalance and dmf-t index of 3-6 year-old children and to emphasize the significance of the preventive dentistry service. In the intent of the research, among the private and state schools in Trabzon, totally 1083 children were examined and their diets were arranged. Oral hygiene instruction was given to the children and the teachers. Chi-square test had been applied to all samples. Logistic regression analysis was done to the data that was statistically significant (p˂0,05). It was found that mean dmf-t score is 2,95±3,60 and caries prevalance is 63,1% in the 3-6 year-old children in Trabzon. S-ECC was detected in 20,4% of children that were examined. Consequently, these findings show that children that have ECC go to the dental office much more than the children that have no caries (p<0,001). Similary, children that have S-ECC go to the dental office much more than the children that have ECC (p<0,001). Yogurt and cheese consumption was statistically found an impressive factor preventing ECC and affecting the severity of dental caries (p˂0,05). It was seen that caries prevalance of preschool children in Trabzon is very high. It should be recommended for children to consume calcium-containing products more to prevent ECC.
