Competitive balance in Turkish football

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to examine Turkish football in terms of competitive balance, to introduce factors affecting competition that is specific to Turkish football, to develop proposals to increase competitive balance and to establish factors to be used in future researches. This research is a descriptive research. In order to realize the research objectives, qualitative research design patterns and document analysis methods were used. Criteria sampling method was used in the research and face to face interviews were made with a total of 20 participants from the stakeholders of the football. The interview form formed by the researcher using open ended questions was used in these interviews. The data obtained is deciphered and coded by 3 experts in the field. C5 indice, Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, Lorenz curve and Gini coefficient were used to measure the competitive balance in the document analysis by using the season-end tables of the last 21-year Super League history. As a result of the research, it has been revealed in the document analysis that the there is no competitive balance regarding 21-year history of Sports Toto Super League. In the other part of the qualitative research, 8 main themes for the 1st question and 7 main themes for the 2nd question emerged with the help of the answers given by the participants regarding the 2 questions asked in the interview form. Participants stated that there was no competitive balance in Sports Toto Super League. The opinions expressed by the participants and the results of the document analysis are in parallel.
