Abstract (EN)

Media can influence audience interpretation and perception of events through framing by emphasizing certain aspects of issues while ignoring others. Previous research on the framing of Africa has revealed that most non-African media portrays Africa in an unfair and negative light. This thesis study uses quantitative and qualitative content analysis, as well as framing analysis, to investigate the general framing of Africa in Turkish newspapers, the types of African news published by Turkish newspapers, the characteristics of African news, and the differences in coverage and framing between North and Sub-Saharan Africa. According to the findings of this thesis study, Turkish newspapers use the responsibility frame the most in their coverage of Africa, accounting for 44.3% of all African news. The analysis also reveals that political news is the most published type of African news in Turkish newspapers and more than 99% of African news in Turkish newspapers covers events with less than 1% initiated by the newspaper's investigations. There are also coverage differences between North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, with North Africa receiving more coverage than Sub-Saharan Africa. The difference is also in framing, with the responsibility frame being used more frequently in North African news coverage and the human-interest frame being used the most in Sub-Saharan African news coverage.
